Student Access and Opportunity

The Office of Student Access and Opportunity unifies two of the university's most impactful initiatives, the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) and the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), under one roof to streamline support for students from historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Mission

Our mission is to cultivate a diverse community of scholars who excel academically, lead with integrity, and contribute meaningfully to society. Through academic enrichment, professional development, and holistic guidance, we strive to remove barriers, foster inclusion, and create pathways for success in higher education and beyond.

  • HEOP The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program provides comprehensive academic, financial, and personal support for students who meet New York State financial guidelines.
  • CSTEP The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program promotes academic and professional success and preparation for economically disadvantaged students who are pursuing careers in STEM or health-related fields.

Meet the Team

Kiman Baldon

My goal is to bring structure to students in both programs, assist them with finding their own paths to professionalism, and creating a community amongst the students and staff that feels safe, positive, and cultivates the leaders of the future.

About me:

I DJ, engineer, and run a joint venture business called Ear Quality, LLC, that works with artist and producers in the entertainment industry, primarily in the Buffalo area. We are working with clients right now that are having a huge impact on Buffalo’s music scene

Steven McIlwain

My goal is to ensure that every student will be academically successful in the program through providing a framework that addresses student needs such as providing restorative check ins, maintaining a 2.5 GPA, providing tabling events, academic enrichment services, stipend opportunities, life skill workshops and mentorship chats with celebrity stature individuals.

About Me:

With my Christian Background, it has been paramount to be a servant in the community while emphasizing student achievement. I have been an educator for 7+ years, from Buffalo Public Schools to now serving students in college academia. I am very passionate about closing achievement gaps and ensuring that all students are supported with the proper leadership, best practices, teachings, guidance and impactful resources.
