Winter in Buffalo
By Jahnelle Ofori-Nkansah
Buffalo winters are no joke. Whether you are from out of state or have lived here your entire life, the cold temperatures, snow, and wind can make you want to stay bundled up in your room all day. While staying cozy is nice, doing the same thing every day can get boring fast. That is why I wanted to share a guide for fellow students on affordable ways to enjoy winter in Buffalo while staying warm and not completely breaking the bank.
One great indoor option is the Buffalo and Erie County Museum of Science. Student and military admission is $19 with a valid ID, and if you have a library card, you can also get a small discount. The museum offers hands-on exhibits that make it easy to spend a few hours learning and exploring indoors.
Another popular winter activity is visiting the Aquarium of Niagara, with admission around $25. It is a calm and fun way to break up a cold week. The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is also a student favorite, offering admission for $17 with an ID. The warm conservatory and greenery make it feel like a break from winter, even if only for a little while.
Students can also take advantage of discounted and free admission days around the city. The Buffalo Zoo charges $22.50 for regular admission, but on the third Thursday of every month, admission is free. Tickets open for reservation at 10 a.m. on the Monday of that week. The zoo also has several indoor animal houses, making it a great winter-friendly option.
For art lovers, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum offers pay-what-you-wish admission on the first Friday of every month, along with interactive art events and activities. The Burchfield Penney Art Center is another affordable option, with student admission priced at just $5 with a school ID.
If you don't want to leave campus, look no further than the Kavinoky Theatre. Known for its professional productions and beautiful architecture, the Kavinoky runs shows all year round, providing a perfect escape from the snowy weather. Student tickets are only $5, making it one of the most affordable ways to experience live theater in the city. Plus, if you want to bring people along, they offer discounts for friends and family.
Even though winter in Buffalo can feel long and overwhelming, there are plenty of student-friendly activities to help make the season more enjoyable. With a little planning and knowledge of discounts, it is possible to stay warm, have fun, and still stick to a college budget.
