D’Youville University Launches New Office of Student Access and Opportunity
D’Youville University is proud to announce the official opening of the Office of Student Access and Opportunity (SAO). This new office unifies two of the university's most impactful initiatives, the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) and the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), under one roof to streamline support for students from historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The SAO office is dedicated to the mission of cultivating a diverse community of scholars. By providing academic enrichment, professional development, and holistic guidance, SAO aims to remove systemic barriers to higher education.
A Unified Vision for Success
The decision to bring CSTEP and HEOP together stems from a shared goal: increasing access and equity while supporting academic excellence. By merging these programs, the university achieves greater administrative efficiency and allows for deeper collaboration across student services.
Both programs serve a common population and purpose, the SAO leadership team stated. By bringing them under one roof, we capitalize on the overlap in our missions and create an ecosystem of support that prepares students for life post-graduation.
What Students Can Expect
The unification means that resources previously exclusive to one program will now be shared. Students will benefit from:
- Shared Programming: Equal access to workshops, guest speaker events, and academic support.
- Student Leadership Board: A new, paid opportunity for students to assist with office outreach, social media, and professional networking.
- Essential Resources: A one-stop shop providing students with the supplies necessary for classroom success.
- Comprehensive Mentorship: From restorative check-ins to 1-on-1 advisement, the office focuses on the mental and academic well-being of every scholar.
Leadership Driven by Experience
The office is led by Kiman Baldon, Director, and Steven McIlwain, Assistant Director, both of whom bring unique backgrounds and a deep passion for student advocacy to their roles.
Kiman, a well-known local DJ and entrepreneur, focuses on building a safe, positive community. My goal is to help students find their own paths to professionalism and show them that with the right support, there is always a way, says Kiman.
Steven, an educator with over seven years of experience in the Buffalo Public Schools and current doctoral candidate, is focused on closing the achievement gap. The office bridges a sense of belonging, Steven notes. We want to formulate a reality where students feel supported, heard, and respected throughout their entire academic journey.
Looking Ahead
In its first year, the Office of Student Access and Opportunity is prioritizing the building of transparent relationships with students and faculty. By meeting students where they are, SAO plans to expand internship and research opportunities, particularly in STEM and health-related fields, ensuring that DYU graduates are prepared to lead with integrity in their professional lives.
The office invites the campus community to collaborate on new initiatives and looks forward to fostering a culture where every student can say, I am proud of where I came from and where I am going.
