New York has a severe shortage of primary care physicians – as virtually anyone who has attempted to find a new doctor in recent years can attest. The trend exists nationally as well, with shortage projections ranging between 17,800 and 48,000 physicians over the next decade. Furthermore, the demographics of our current physician population are aging. Backfilling this critical role in society is of the utmost importance. We must all reflect and think about what we can do to help prepare the future generation of physicians.

Bringing online a second medical school pipeline in Buffalo is one of the most significant ways to help improve this situation in Western New York. To achieve this, we are in the process of bolstering our clinical education network and, as such, need to identify preceptors to receive students in physicians’ current clinical settings. We are also seeking clinical and non-clinical adjunct faculty to engage in part-time responsibilities related to teaching small, case-based discussion groups, guest lecturing, or teaching in simulation and clinical skills labs.

The proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine at D’Youville University provides a new vehicle for physicians to contribute to society in a different way: through healthcare education. We’re looking for support in all areas of medicine: internal medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, OBGYN, pediatrics, psychiatry and osteopathic manipulative medicine. Physicians and related providers interested in serving as preceptors or adjuncts are encouraged to notify us and validate their credentials at www.dyu.edu/foundingfaculty.

The proposed D’Youville University College of Osteopathic Medicine will surely improve the health and wellbeing of society, but we need our community’s expertise to fully realize this potential.

Dr. Shawn Cannon, DO is the founding dean of D’Youville University’s Proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Cannon spoke with Michael Wooten of WKBW-TV about the shortage and put a call out for physicians and related providers in Western New York to consider training the next generation of physicians with D'Youville University.
