D’Youville Student Pharmacists Recognized at National Meeting

Buffalo, New York – March 21, 2012 – The D'Youville College School of Pharmacy's Academy of Student Pharmacists chapter was honored at the annual meeting of the American Pharmacists Association in New Orleans earlier this month for their participation in the Generation Rx Initiative, an educational program designed to increase public awareness of prescription medication abuse.

D'Youville College student pharmacists visited local area middle and high schools and made eleven presentations to over 3,000 teens and 1,000 adults. Members of the chapter participated in prescription drug take-back days scheduled at sites across Western New York. They also produced a YouTube video to highlight the problem of prescription drug abuse and met with the staff responsible for western New York's Kid Escaping Drugs program to learn more about the problem.

Fifty-five chapters submitted reports summarizing their chapters' efforts and D'Youville's chapter was awarded first place. The chapter will receive a plaque honoring their achievement, a $1000 cash award and reimbursement for travel expenses to attend the University of Utah School on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies, June 17-22, 2012.

The D'Youville chapter of the Academy of Student Pharmacists is the first professional organization developed at the new D'Youville College School of Pharmacy. Christine Rotella is the chapter president. Joshua Cahill is the coordinator for the Generation Rx project and Drs. Stephanie Brian and Michelle Lewis serve as chapter advisors.

The Generation Rx program was developed by the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and funded by the Cardinal Health Foundation.
