D’Youville Men’s Soccer Gets Set to Make History on Championship Sunday
BUFFALO, N.Y. – There was a vision for what D’Youville men's soccer could become. It would take time, commitment, and a group of players willing to believe in something bigger than themselves. Now, that vision has brought the Saints to the doorstep of program history.
For the first time in program history, D’Youville University men's soccer will compete for an East Coast Conference (ECC) Championship, traveling to face top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas College this Sunday, November 8. The Saints enter the championship as the No. 2 seed following a historic regular season and the program's first-ever ECC Tournament victory.
At 8-5-5 overall and 4-1-3 in conference play, D’Youville has already recorded its most wins in a season since joining NCAA Division II. One more victory would give the Saints nine wins, establishing a new program record for victories in a single season.
But the significance of this season extends far beyond the win column.
D’Youville earned the No. 2 seed in the ECC Tournament for the first time in program history, securing a first-round bye and becoming the first Division II program in D’Youville history to enter postseason play as a No. 2 seed. On November 1, the Saints continued their historic run with a 2-0 shutout victory over Molloy University, earning the program's first-ever ECC Tournament win and securing its first appearance in the conference championship game.
For Head Coach Sean Hallas, the opportunity to compete for a conference championship represents the culmination of a process that began long before this season.
"When I first came into the program, there was a lot of work that needed to be done. We knew we had the opportunity to build something special, but we also understood that it wasn't going to happen overnight. There have been a lot of challenges along the way, and we've had players who have bought into what we're trying to create, stayed committed to the vision, and helped lay the foundations for where we are today."
That commitment has translated into success both on the field and across the conference. The Saints made their presence known in the ECC postseason awards, earning four of the five major conference honors and 10 total All-Conference selections.
Jonas Driesch was named ECC Defensive Player of the Year, Liam Ulinski earned ECC Rookie of the Year honors, Matthew Solorio was selected as ECC Goalkeeper of the Year, and Hallas was recognized as ECC Coach of the Year.
The Saints also collected four First Team All-Conference selections in Ethan Robinson, Shawn Richardson, Matthew Solorio, and Jonas Driesch. Ewan Brodie earned Second Team honors, while Liam Ulinski was named to the Third Team. The recognition marks the first time in program history that D’Youville men's soccer has earned major ECC All-Conference awards.
Individually, the Saints have also established themselves among the nation's best. Junior goalkeeper Matthew Solorio is tied for fourth in NCAA Division II with nine shutouts, while D’Youville ranks tied for fifth nationally in team shutout percentage at .556. On the offensive end, junior Shawn Richardson is tied for second in Division II with six penalty kick goals.
The individual accomplishments have been impressive, but Hallas believes the team's collective commitment has been just as important to its success.
"There's a real level of accountability within the group. The players demand a lot from each other, they communicate well, and they understand that everyone has a role to play in our success. Whether that's a starter, someone coming off the bench, or someone supporting the group in training every day, everyone has contributed to getting us to this point," said Hallas.
That collective effort will be tested one more time against a familiar opponent.
D’Youville and St. Thomas Aquinas previously met on October 3 in Sparkill, N.Y., playing to a 2-2 draw. Richardson opened the scoring for the Saints with a penalty kick in the 33rd minute before Omar Daoudi found the equalizer in the 85th minute off an assist from Max Johnson.
St. Thomas Aquinas enters Sunday's championship as the tournament's No. 1 seed and will host the contest. Neither program has previously captured an ECC Men's Soccer Championship, meaning Sunday's matchup will give one team the opportunity to claim its first conference title.
For the Saints, the opportunity represents something much bigger than a single game. It is a chance to reward the work that has gone into building the program, to represent the teammates and coaches who have helped lay its foundation, and to take another step toward a future that this group has worked so hard to create.
When asked about the chemistry that has carried the team throughout the season, Hallas pointed to something that cannot simply be drawn up on a whiteboard or developed through training sessions.
"Ultimately, I think the chemistry comes from a shared belief in what we're capable of achieving. They enjoy playing together, they fight for one another, and they've developed a real connection both on and off the field. That's not something you can manufacture as a coach. It's something the players must create themselves, and this group has done an outstanding job of that."
Now, one final opportunity awaits.
With kickoff scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, the Saints will take the field with a chance to capture the first ECC Championship in program history, establish a new single-season wins record, and potentially secure the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
The foundation has been laid. The history has already been made. Now, D’Youville men's soccer has a chance to write its next chapter.
