Back-to-Back: D’Youville Esports Secures Second Straight PLC Overwatch Championship
D’Youville University’s Esports program is officially a dynasty. With a commanding victory over Sam Houston State, the Saints secured their second consecutive PLC Overwatch Championship, proving that their dominance in the arena is no fluke.
Led by head coach Mark Alicea, the team entered the finals with a blend of humility and tactical precision. “We were confident that we had the best strategy for that match, for that opponent, on those maps, at that time,” Alicea reflected. “We weren’t confident that we would necessarily win, but we were confident that we were prepared.”
That preparation was anchored by team captain Pengbo Yan, who guided the squad through an unblemished, undefeated season. For Yan, the victory was the result of a year-long evolution in team chemistry and discipline.
“I honestly was not too worried about our performance,” Yan said. “Our team had already spent a full year playing together, building chemistry, and practicing regularly. I could see everyone’s improvement over time, so I trusted our preparation. More than feeling nervous, I had a very strong desire to win."
During the heat of competition, Yan’s leadership focused on the fundamentals: communication, positioning, and clinical execution. His mantra for the team was simple but effective: "Use cover, communicate everything clearly, and reduce mistakes."
“Whether someone needed help on an off-angle, planned to make a risky play, or needed more healing, I wanted everyone to call it out,” Yan explained. “My message was simple: make fewer mistakes, punish the other team’s mistakes, and trust that we could win.”
This victory tastes especially sweet following a narrow, heartbreaking defeat in the Spring ‘25 finals. For the Saints, this championship isn't just about a trophy, it’s about the culture they’ve built together.
“Winning this championship means a lot to me,” Yan said. “It is a recognition of the hard work of the whole team, not only the players, but also our coach, Mark, who has done so much for us outside of the matches.”
This latest victory further cements D’Youville’s reputation as a powerhouse in the rapidly growing world of collegiate Esports. For a team that prides itself on discipline and unity, the back-to-back titles serve as a testament to the talent and tenacity thriving right here on campus.
