Master's Research

The Graduate Research Journey: Critically Appraised Topics (CAT)

At D’Youville, we transform students into clinical investigators. Our curriculum focuses on the Critically Appraised Topic (CAT)—a high-yield evidence synthesis that bridges the gap between complex literature and bedside care.

The CAT Project

A CAT is an intensive investigation into a specific clinical uncertainty. Students move beyond passive learning to:

  • Investigate Interests: Identify and address gaps in current medical literature.
  • Master Appraisal: Filter existing research for validity, reliability, and real-world clinical utility.
  • Drive Evidence-Based Practice: Translate raw data into actionable treatment recommendations.

From Inquiry to Dissemination

The research process mirrors professional standards, guiding students through a structured investigative cycle:

  1. Inquiry: Developing a formal PICO question to address a health-related topic.
  2. Evidence Retrieval: Conducting an exhaustive search of the scientific literature.
  3. Critical Appraisal: Rigorously evaluating the quality of available studies.
  4. Presentation: Disseminating findings through professional poster sessions.

Professional Impact

Our students are active contributors to the medical community. D’Youville PA research is frequently recognized at the highest levels:

  • National Conferences: Presentations at AAPA and NYSSPA.
  • Research Awards: Top honors at major professional symposia.
  • Publication: Abstracts featured in peer-reviewed journals such as JAAPA.

Our goal is simple: Reinforce evidence-based delivery and empower PAs to evaluate the literature that will shape their future practice critically.
