What to Expect During a Counseling Session

What Happens in a Counseling Session

In Your First Meeting: Your counselor will review the intake paperwork with you completed when you booked the appointment, and then typically ask about current concerns and what you hope to achieve with counseling.

Processing & Perspective: Counseling is a safe and private space to voice your thoughts and feelings, which can help you to gain new insights and perspective about your concern.

Empowerment, Not "Fixing": Your counselor does not act as an authority figure with a list of instructions and does not give advice. Instead, your counselor will provide tools, strategies, and support to help you build your own resilience toward addressing your concerns.

 Key Takeaways for Counseling

No "Right" Way: You do not need to have the right words, emotions, or answers. Counseling is a space where you can simply be yourself.

Goal-Oriented: While you may need time to vent, counseling is ultimately about helping you gain clarity and develop the tools needed to create meaningful change.
